What is the purpose of the Passport Index?

The Passport Index is an interactive online tool that allows users to explore the world of passports by understanding the strength of passports around the world and their weight in today's ever-changing international landscape.

Calculate your passport's Global Mobility Score, improve your passport ranking, and explore the latest news and insights on visa policy, biotech, nation branding, public security, philanthropy, foreign policy, and more.

The Passport Index was created by Global Immigration in 2014 and has quickly become the world's most popular destination for understanding the strength of a passport. As of December 2020, it has been viewed more than 65 million times and is the undisputed global reference for passport rankings.

How does the Passport Index work?

The Passport Index's methodology has been carefully designed to ensure absolute accuracy and consistency. The data is based on dedicated research using public sources and official information provided by government agencies. Our index covers 193 UN members and 6 selected territories. Territories that do not issue their own passports are not included in the calculation and are not considered destinations. Countries that issue passports, whether or not they implement independent visa policies, are considered destinations.

Why is passport strength important?

As one of the most important accessories to our identity, our passports have transcended their physical form to now have an impact on global opportunities, freedom of movement and quality of life. Entrusted by governments to monitor and improve their passport rankings, the Passport Index has become a trusted partner in enhancing global mobility.

Implications

In today's world, being a global citizen is more important than ever. Having a second citizenship is liberating and empowering and comes with a shared responsibility for the world.

Empowerment

Educate and advocate for the power of our passport. Through our diversity, our passport is one of the most important tools for impacting global opportunity, mobility and quality of life.

Participate

Discussions on visa policy, citizenship, nation branding, global mobility, public safety, philanthropy, and foreign policy are encouraged.

Passport ranking

Passport Index developed three different types of ranking systems to reveal trends and define algorithms, mobility, unity and freedom: global, personal and popular

Global Passport Power Rankings

Passports from around the world are sorted by Mobility Score (MS), which includes visa-free, visa-on-arrival, e-travel pass and e-visa (if the country issues it within 3 working days). The higher the MS score, the better the global mobility enjoyed by its passport holders. If some countries have the same MS, they are sorted by visa-free, visa-on-arrival, e-travel pass, and within the same MS, the more visa-free, the higher the ranking. You can filter by region, alliance, continent and passport type, and compare up to four passports' MS.

Personal passport strength ranking

The new Passport Index introduces a unique ranking system, with individual rankings for each passport, based on country and visa characteristics. Each passport's ranking is unique, as two passports cannot have the same ranking number. We calculate it using MS and UNDP HDI (Human Development Index). The Human Development Index ( HDI ) is a summary measure of average achievement in key aspects of human development: longevity, good health, knowledgeability and a decent standard of living. This means that two countries with the same MS but different HDIs will rank differently. You can filter and compare the MS of up to four passports by region, union, continent and passport type.

Popularity Ranking

Some passports are respected and allow visa-free travel to many parts of the world. How popular are they? The global country welcome level considers the country and how many passports it welcomes without the need for a prior visa. The Welcome Country Score (WCS) includes visa-free, visa-on-arrival, e-travel pass and e-visa if the country is within 3 working days. The Passport Index's country popularity ranking shows the most and least popular countries in the world, ranked solely by the number of countries they accept visa-free or visa-on-arrival. You can filter and compare up to four passports' MS by region, union, continent and passport type.

World Openness Rating

Use our WOS tool to explore the many factors underlying the sociopolitical status of different countries and analyse how welcoming or open our world has become.

The World Openness Score (WOS) is a global score that counts the number of countries that can visit each other without a visa. The maximum WOS is 199 x 199 = 39402, because every country can visit every other country without a visa. The closer the score is to this final number, the more open, or more precisely, borderless, our world is becoming. We calculate the WOS at the end of each year and track the score progress with a live ranking. We can filter countries by continent, region and alliance. The WOS gives us information about the welcome of the world by increasing or decreasing the openness of countries around the world.
